About nutritionDay
nutritionDay is a one-day cross-sectional audit with outcome evaluation.
The aim of nutritionDay worldwide is to improve knowledge and awareness of malnutrition in health care institutions by using simple screening tests for nutritional risk. nutritionDay is in line with the resolution on food and nutritional care in hospitals by the Council of Europe 2003.
nutritionDay is a one-day data collection using specific questionnaires for hospital wards, intensive care units and nursing homes. On this day questionnaires are completed by unit staff and patients or residents complete questionnaires about individual nutritional care and the actual nutritional status of patients or residents. After data collection the unit staff enters and uploads data into the nutritionDay-online database. As a result units receive an online report presenting their results as a snapshot in comparison with similar units worldwide.
The idea of nutritionDay is thus to compare, monitor and continuously improve nutritional care in health care facilities around the world. This report gives each unit the ability to compare and benchmark their nutritional care with similar health care facilities. In this way health care institutions can assess their prevalence of malnutrition, identify areas for improvement innutritional care and fight against malnutrition. The data we collect is also available to scientists to improve and share nutritional care knowledge in patients and the elderly.
Questionnaires are available in over 30 languages to facilitate participation from all over the world. No specialist knowledge is needed to perform the data collection and means that trainees and students can collect data
Proper nutrition care must become part of overall health care so that malnutrition can be reduced thereby improving the health outcomes of patients and the elderly!
