The European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN) is an organization established in 1980 in the field of Parenteral and Enteral nutrition which promotes basic and clinical research, basic and advanced education, organization of consensus statements about clinical care and care quality control.

The "Arbeitsgemeinschaft Klinische Ernährung"(AKE) was founded in 1979 by a group of anesthesiologists, gastroenterologists and natural scientists.
